BBQ in Tokyo

posted by  banzaitokyo | 7 years, 10 months ago

The enjoyment of cooking and eating together around the grill cannot be denied by food-lovers all over the world. Even in Japan grilled meat is an important part of many restaurants menus. However, Barbecue in Japan is slightly different from the western variation of it, but no meat-lover will come away disappointed! Japanese BBQ has a variety of meat and fresh seafood and probably you will need some practice to eat your grilled sausage with a pair of chopsticks.

As summer is getting closer, many parks in Tokyo will offer you a space where you can enjoy BBQ with your friends and family.

If you own all the equipment and you would like to do your own BBQ without the fees of privately owned areas, public parks are free of charge. You can find those parks in convenient locations around Tokyo and some of the places even offer to rent the equipment.

If you want to buy your own BBQ stuff, check out Costco or Tokyu Hands. They have reasonable priced equipment for your outdoor party.

Just keep in mind, that the use of open fires is strictly prohibited. Several parks just allow BBQs during specified hours. Those parks usually also have designated BBQ areas, which often require a reservation in advance.

Parks with BBQ facilities are: Musashino Park, Koganei Park, Kiba Park, Wadabori Park, Kasai Rinkai Park.

In the outskirts of Tokyo you will find several parks with BBQ facilities where you can spend a day with your friends. Akikawa Keikoku is located only one hour outside of the city. Find your BBQ spot close to the beautiful river, surrounded by the refreshing green of the forest and relax from your busy life in Tokyo.

Wild Magic offers you a “vintage and western-style” camp ground located on the waterfront opposite of down town Tokyo. You can even stay over night and experience camping in the heart of Tokyo if you pay a bit extra. BBQ equipment is provided.

Opening times: 11:00am-3:00pm, 5:00pm-9:00pm, 5:00pm-10:00am (next morning) time slots

Fees: Basic 4 hour package (equipment/food supplies not provided): 1,500 Yen per person;

Advanced 4 hour package (equipment/food supplies included): 4,500 Yen per person;

Advanced 4 hour package + overnight stay: 7,000 Yen per person

Access: Odaiba; 1 min walk form Shin-toyosu Station

Website: http://wildmagic.jp/ (Japanese Only)

Of course – you cannot do BBQ without the right equipment. To get the necessary items for your grill party you might need some basic Japanese.

  • ??? – ???? – yaki ami – cooking grate
  • ????????? ( ?????????) – baabekyuu setto – barbecue set
  • ???????? ( ????????) – baabekyunoro – grill
  • ????????? (?????????)- baabekyuu sauce – barbecue sauce
  • ??????? – (?????????) – baabekyuu shou – barbecue space, bbq spot
  • ? – ( ??) – sumi – charcoal, charcoal briquets

Next question – at where I should by the meat and other? Simple, there are several shops selling the ingredients with quite reasonable price as Hanamasa (Japanese site) , The Meat Guy (English site) , Halal food or just visit your local butcher and try to get the best deal.

If you can read Japanese, BBQLand has enough options for you, to make your BBQ party perfect. Don’t forget, that most of the parks don’t have a designated BBQ area. Before you start cooking, check if you picked a BBQ spot, which allows open fire. Many parks and outdoor spots don’t over you containers for your trash. In this case, please keep in mind to take your trash home with you.

If you are a big fan of BBQ and you want to get some delicious grilled meat in Tokyo you can join us in June!

We will celebrate St John’s Day (or Jaanipäev) at Akabane!

St John’s Eve (Jaaniõhtu, also Jaanilaupäev) and St John’s Day (Jaanipäev) are the most important days in the Estonian calendar, apart from Christmas. The short summer seasons with long days and brief nights hold special significance for the people of Estonia.

Jaanipäev is celebrated in the night between June 23 and 24, a few days after the summer solstice, when the night seems to be non-existent.

On Jaaniõhtu, Estonians all around the country will gather with their families (could easily be international one :D) , or at larger events to celebrate this important day with singing and dancing (yes we do that other than in Estonian as well), as Estonians have done for centuries.

Understandably, some of the rituals of Jaanipäev have very strong folkloric roots.

The best-known Jaanik, or midsummer, ritual is the lighting of the bonfire and then jumping over it. This is seen as a way of guaranteeing prosperity and avoiding bad luck. Likewise, to not light the fire is to invite the destruction of your house by fire. The fire also frightened away mischievous spirits who avoided it at all costs, thus ensuring a good harvest. So, the bigger the fire, the further the mischievous spirits stayed away. Since we are not in Estonia lest try not to burn down any nearby villages …

Last years feast!
