Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. said Tuesday it has obtained approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to manufacture and sell its oral aripiprazole tablets embedded with a miniscule sensor, the world’s first digital medicine system.

The system is designed to ensure that patients with severe mental illnesses take drugs every day. If such patients forget to take their medications, they cannot lead everyday lives, increasing the burden on family members and caregivers.
