Locals in western Japan have heralded the arrival of spring with an annual grass-burning event on the Akiyoshidai plateau.

Residents and officials of the city of Mine, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, set fire to a field of dry grass every year to clear the way for new growth.

They began this year by offering a silent prayer for a man who died at the previous event. He was overcome by smoke while working alone.
