The norm is to pay one's own part of the bill (Betsu Betsu), instead of splitting. Since food is considered expensive and the cost of different drinks can be very different, they think it is fare to pay this way.

When close friends meet up, it is common to split the bill (WariKan).

Some restaurants discourage Betsu Betsu because it takes more time at the cash register. It is rare for Japanese restaurants to have somebody permanently stationed at the cash register.
