My Indian friend has this to say: "If memorization is the same as being good at math, we are much better. New could tell 19x19 by memory, while in primary school. But I don't care. Japanese kids have a much more balanced education".

Could it be that they just learn a lot more things together with math, and that helps them to solve problems?
