What are some interesting facts on Japanese health insurance?

Health insurance is mandatory in Japan, and medium to large companies provide their own insurance. Those unemployed can get the standard health insurance form the town office.

There are lots of questions about this, from those who want to work or stay in Japan for medium or long terms. Let's start an information page for such people.

The one that I find interesting is that the company has to pay more health insurance for a person who has a BMI that is too high, and/or has a waist line that is larger than the given limit for the BMI.

The companies in turn send these "metabo" employees to health and diet seminars, which is quite annoying.

I do not personally have a problem with this since I am quite skinny, but I have heard strong responses from my American friends. Some of them mention "the right to be fat" :-p.
