Weather officials say the northern part of the Kyushu region in southwestern Japan has seen unprecedented rainfall since Wednesday.

On Thursday afternoon, the Meteorological Agency lifted emergency rain warnings for Fukuoka Prefecture and Oita Prefecture, but it is calling on residents to stay on alert against mudslides, overflowing of rivers and flooding.

Rainfall of more than 540 millimeters was registered in Asakura, Fukuoka Prefecture over the past 24 hours, about 50 percent more than usual for the month of July.
The city of Iki, Nagasaki Prefecture, has seen rainfall exceeding 300 millimeters in the past 24 hours.
The Agency is warning of hourly rainfall of 70 millimeters in some parts of northern Kyushu later on Thursday.
