An aquarium in the southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa says it has achieved a world first by successfully breeding black sea turtles in captivity.

The aquarium at the Ocean Expo Park says 11 babies were born from 262 eggs laid between June and August. They are now about 7 centimeters long.

Black sea turtles live in the Eastern Pacific off Mexico and Peru.

The parents were found in waters off Okinawa in 1998 and 2009.
