A window-like object about 1-meter square has fallen on an elementary school near a US airbase in Japan's southern prefecture of Okinawa.

Officials of Futenma Daini Elementary School in Ginowan City said the object fell into the school grounds shortly after 10 AM on Wednesday.

The officials said about 30 students were taking part in a gym class in the area. They said a US military helicopter was flying over the school at the time.

They said one student sustained an injury to the left hand.

The school is adjacent to the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station.
