A long-term foreign resident going through the motions in Chiba Prefecture still has no idea about the meaning of “せきにん”.
5-years-a-gaijin Tony Smith has come across the word せきにん and can even say it in English, but hasn’t really integrated it into his vernacular.
“I regularly ask my J-girlfriend to check my mail,” says Smith.
“If she’s not available or there’s no one else to ask, I’ll just ask some rando J-person if they think it’s important or not.”The 26-year-old Assistant Language Teacher needs much more assistance than he provides.
