The Japanese government released a report on Friday advocating for the reduction of tax for food items consumed while traveling on public transport.
The government will raise the general consumption tax rate from 8% to 10% from October 1, but this tax hike won’t apply to certain eating habits.
“Consumers will only be taxed 6% if they tell the cashier they’ll be consuming their meal on a train or any other kind of public transport,” the report said.
“If they promise to really stink out the carriage, they will be taxed 5%”Dining out will incur 10% tax, but eating the same meal with your mouth open will incur 9% tax.
“If people eat with a knife and fork they will have to pay 12% tax,” the report says.
