Eating exotic animals is a sign of status and wealth in some Asian countries.
Add to this the use of some animals in traditional medicine and you have a thriving trade in wild animals, some procured illegally, creating a breeding ground for disease and the chance for viruses to leap to humans.
China has already brought in a ban on the consumption of wildlife, which is expected to become law later this year.
So could the pandemic be a watershed moment for curbing the global wildlife trade?
