Now that the Tokyo Olympics has scrapped plans for that stupidly expensive stadium, it can focus on other things. Like questions over its new logo. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics logo was revealed this week with a fancy intro clip. Art director Kenjiro Sano, one of Japan's top graphic artists, designed the logo.
I don't see any problem with the logo. As a designer you have only a limited number of primitives to work with. To me it is clearly not a case of plagiarism and the resemblance is purely accidental. The Olympic Committee seems to have the same opinion.
Geometrically, it is very similar to the Theâtre de Liège logotype; the resemblance is indeed real. Whether this is just a coincidence or the art director copied the logo, we probably will never know...
