What if Tokyo got rid of all the animated billboards and the appealing advertisements? If you've ever thought about this scenario, now's the time to see how the grand cosmopolitan centre would appear in an adless version. Graphic designer Nicolas Damiens, responsible for this utterly-original project, noted that his intention was not to criticize capitalism, but simply in order "to see Tokyo from another point of view". The result is an unexpected work of geometry, a monochromatic panorama and simultaneously a portrait of a simpler-yet-charming Tokyo.
They say it was an April fools joke. And not because it is technologically impossible, but rather because Google is so heavily invested in advertising.
Tokyo's advertising is quite special, a part of the city's charm in that visual noise. I wouldn't want to clean the city from all the ads, but as a though experiment, this is quite interesting to imagine for a minute what the city would look liike without ads.
