Arriving in Japan – from Haneda to Central Tokyo

Haneda Airport, formerly known as Tokyo International Airport is with more than 60 million passengers per year one of the busiest airports in the world. However Haneda mostly handles domestic flights and just a few international flights.

Opened in 1931, located less than 30 minutes south of central Tokyo this airport is more convenient to reach than Narita airport.

Inside Haneda airport you can find “The Royal Park Hotel“, which has a part of it in the transit zone – therefore transit travelers can stay there overnight without passing immigration.

Terminal 1 is mainly used by the airline service JAL, whereas Terminal 2 is used by ANA. Shuttle buses operate frequently and for free between those two terminals.

If you have arrived in Haneda airport, there are different ways of how to get to your final destination.

If you want to go by train, you can use the Tokyo Monorailway, which is not a JR line, but is covered by the JR Rail Pass. It just takes 20 minutes to Hamamatsucho and costs 490 yen. From Hamamatsucho you can use the JR Yamanote line to reach all greater stations in Tokyo, such as Shinjuku, Shibuya or Ikebukuro.

The Keikyu Railways stop at Shinagawa and also at Yokohama. From Haneda to Shinagawa it just takes 10 minutes and costs 170 Yen. Shinagawa is also connected with the Yamanote line and convenient to use for your trip to central Tokyo.

Of course there are also bus services offered from the airport. The limousine bus needs 25 to 45 minutes to Tokyo station, depending on the traffic situation. It costs 900 yen and if you want to depart from Tokyo station again, the bus service is offered every 30 to 60 minutes.

Moreover you can also take a Taxi to central Tokyo, depending on your destination costs will be between 5,000 Yen or 11,000 Yen and therefore a bit expensive. During nighttime there is a surcharge about 20% for transportation cost, that’s why Taxis are not recommended for the common travelers.

There are some things you have to keep in mind, when you arrive in Haneda.

Many international flights land and depart in the early morning or late night. However, public transport stops in Tokyo around midnight which will leave you two options, stay over night at the hotel at the airport or use Haneda Airport Express, late night and early morning bus service. Taxis remain available even during the night, but are relatively expensive, besides many hotels might not allow late-night check-in, so you need to check this in advance.

Some bus services offer late-night transportation services until 1 am from Haneda to several places in Tokyo or Yokohama. But again those services are more expensive than the daily bus shuttles.

The first connections in the morning by train arrive around 5:15 in Haneda, bus services are even offered earlier and arrive around 4:30.

Have a safe trip!
