Plastic food models amuse many first time visitors to Japan. Most of them look surprisingly real. Here is your chance to make some by yourself.
Last week I jumped at the chance to visit a place that makes fake food models for Japanese restaurants and learn the secrets of making tempura and lettuce! Making fake lettuce is so much easier than making real lettuce. No need to acquire the superpower to create life.
I agree that food models are one of the things that surprises first time visitors in Japan. The models are extremely realistic and it's hard to guess how it is done. But most of the times the tricks are quite simple (although difficult to guess). Not only plastic but also wax and other materials are used in those models. It is something that is very interesting to learn.
