100 yen is 0.72 euro, which is near 1 euro. This type of stores is very prominent around the world; in Europe, we have '1 euro stores' but we don't pay any consumption tax. I reckon they're very good alternatives to big retailers and they allow you to buy bare essentials at a symbolic price.

If I remember correctly, the US version is called "Dollar Store". Daiso has gone international and is selling at different prices in different countries. It will be nice to have a web site with details on this type of shops worldwide.
