Year End Vacation

Japanese companies have a year end vacation from around December 29th to around January 5th. The exact dates vary according to the positioning of weekends etc.

There are fewer trains during the peak hours, but it becomes easier to travel because many of the salarymen are on vacation.

Do other countries have similar vacations around the New Year? I know that some countries put higher priority on Christmas.
