Website updates

We updated Akihabara.Tokyo. Now it is powered by askapp.org Django based script. I am not going to get into technical tetails but I would like to outline here what functionality we have already build and what we are planning to build yet. So that you will have an idea of what Akihabara.Tokyo will be like in a few months.

What it is

It is a communty platform that allows to share links to interesting articles, create discussions and post questions and receive answers. The goal is to have the most interesting and recent threads appear on the home page of the website. So that you can come to akihabara.tokyo home page and find right away the top articles on Japan today. And you can dive deeper and find more news and blog posts by checking out our "recent" submissions.

Three types of threads

Link
If yo find an interesting article about Japan, you can use this type of thread to submit it.
Discussion
This type of thread doesn't have a link to an outside resource. Use it to start a topic that you would like to discuss with other members or ask an open question that doesn't require a specific answer.
Question
You may want to choose this type of thread to ask a question where you would want to get a specific answer. This type of thread is not fully implemented yet, so you may want to stick to "discussion" for now.

Thread ratings

Our homepage only features the 10 most interesting threads. You can click the "up" button next to the thread to add to its rating. To calculate the thread's score we will take into account the number of votes and the age of the thread. The older threads may receive lower score even compared to newer threads with less votes.

I wanted to poing out that the formula that we use to calculate threads' scores and to for the "top" page is not final. We will be adjusting it as we go. So far the score drops too rapidy and it is probably not that great since we don't have that many threads for the moment.

We moved the database from google cloud and it seems to work noticeably faster now.
