Hoping to drum up more business, including from overseas visitors and the elderly, base taxi fares were lowered Monday to ¥410 from ¥730 in central Tokyo and two suburban cities.

The new base fare is for the first 1.052 km, while the one it replaced covered the first 2 km. The new system applies to taxis operating in the 23 wards and the western Tokyo cities of Musashino and Mitaka.

That's a Yuuuuge reduction! 700 yen plus for the first 2 km is pretty discouraging for a student, or a salaryman who wants to get to the station quickly. This should actually reduce the cost for the first 2 km, too, since the rate after the base fee is about 90 yen per 500 m.

I know when I was in Japan last year, I blew through quite a bit of money just on fair alone. This not only good news for locals but tourists who frequent Tokyo!
