Why is the suicide rate high in Japan?

posted by  Tanuki | 8 years, 1 month ago

As explained in this article (https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20170321_17/), 1 in 4 Japanese has considered suicide at some point. But the number of actual suicides has gone down; 5-10 years ago, the annual suicide count was about 34,000. That is much higher than the current 21,000 odd.

What is your take on this situation?

This is good news. I didn't know about this positive change in suicide rates in Japan and I think it is a result of many positive changes that come along with the country opening up. It is not only about immigration but about opening up culturally. I think Japan is no longer focused on "traditional" values but looks towards other ways of lives where Live / Work balance is more leaning towards life and not only work :)
