The Suntory distillery in Yamazaki, near the ancient capital of Kyoto, is where the first drop of made-in-Japan malt whisky was distilled in 1924.

These days, Japanese whisky is winning accolades from around the world, often beating the products from Scotland its makers set out to emulate.

I think it is partly due to the "Japan" brand. Another possible reason is the increase of Asian consumers who prefer Japanese alcohols and venture in to trying whisky. Once there is a good customer base, Japanese companies are willing to try hard and innovate to make better products.

"Japan" brand is strong indeed. Japanese Whiskys started out in Europe as an exotic curiosiry, but recently it moved to the same category as Scotch and Irish Whiskys, which is authentic high quality respected products and we are seeing more and more of it in the stores.
