The Tokyo Fire Department has begun offering multilingual call-handling to improve efficiency of service when emergency calls are made by foreigners in the Japanese capital.

24-hour interpretation services are now available for 119 ambulance calls in 4 other languages in addition to English.

With the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics just 3 years away, the department has added Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish services

Things are improving quite fast these days. A few years ago, multi-language support was much less common. But there is more room to improve. Last night, I had to call a police station on behalf of a visiting friend, to help him to find the phone that he lost while sightseeing. I hope there will be help for that kind of things as well, in the near future.
