A Japanese machinery maker and a governmental organization say they have generated electricity using ocean currents.

IHI and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO, held a test in waters off the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima.

They say sea currents revolved the turbine of an experimental generator submerged 20 to 50 meters under the surface of water.
