Equipment to float building to offset tremors www3.nhk.or.jp

Researchers have come up with a novel way to protect buildings from earthquake damage.

A group consisting of a disaster-prevention research institute and private companies has developed a device that enables a building to float above the ground to insulate it from shaking.

Existing quake-resistance technology includes installing rubber and other devices between the building and the ground to absorb shocks. Another device uses hydraulics to control vibrations.

I sawa video of this in the news. It will need a storage of gas, but that should be fine for most buildings if used only during a big quake. I hope it becomes practical soon.
