Is dried bonito popular in other countries, too?

Dried bonito, called katsuo bushi, is a common ingredient in Japanese dishes. This is the first food seasoning that Japanese babies get to taste.

Apparently, a Japanese company setup a dried bonito factory in France . Is it popular in Europe?

In South Asia, it is called Maldive Fish (because Maldives produces a lot of it). The drying process is less detailed, but the taste and popularity are nearly the same.

Wow, I am surprised to know that they are setting up a factory here in France. At the same time I am not surprised, Japanese restaurants are very popular. Certain products like Nori and sticky rise can now be bought in most all large supermarkets. But I doubt that bonito will find it's way to the mainstream household, I rather think it will be used in Japanese restaurants.
